THE THING is a Norwegian/Swedish improvisational trio that sounds to my ears like a combination of free jazz and death metal. I saw them a few months back at Trinosophes, the Detroit performance space where I recorded the Over The Pavement concert DVD last year. There is no describing them. Here they are.
About two years ago, Irish-born singer-songwriter Mark Dignam — a father of two who lives in Pittsburgh — took his band, the House of Song, into Treelady Recording Studios together with a live audience primed to sing along.
