I spent the snowy first weekend of February at a gallery and performance space called Trinosophes, in the Eastern Market area of Detroit, recording video and audio of a unique festival of experimental and improvisational music, Over The Pavement. I’m working on a full-length DVD of festival highlights, but meanwhile, here are a few preview clips.

Marshall Allen (alto sax/synth) and Danny Ray Thompson (baritone sax/flute/percussion) are veteran Philadelphia musicians and longtime members of Sun Ra’s Arkestra. They performed “Space Is the Place” (title song of a little-known movie starring Ra) as an encore on the third night of the festival.

Battle Trance brings together four young virtuosos of tenor sax into a densely woven musical tapestry that is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Battle Trance is led by Travis LaPlante and includes Patrick Breiner, Matthew Nelson and Jeremy Viner.
